"Being a Woman Entrepreneur"

Kylie Little - Founder, EssentialBaby.com.au

Kylie Little launched Essential Baby in 1999 with no knowledge of the internet or babies but with a strong desire to build a business. With virtually no funding (and a lot of unpaid hours) the site grew quickly to become the number one parenting site in Australia. Featuring online diaries, discussion forum, content and an online store, members regularly shared that they found EB to be an invaluable source of support, friendship and information throughout the roller-coaster ride of conception, pregnancy, birth and new parenthood. Members would often describe themselves as EB addicts, returning to the site every day to touch base with friends and share support and information with one another.

While the site launched with an online store, the intention was always to build traffic to generate online revenue (and ultimately to close the online store when ad revenue was covering operating costs). However, the dot com crash in 2000 forced a new plan, with online retail becoming virtually the sole revenue source for many years. By 2003, with the success of the EB online store, Kylie and her husband borrowed to open a "bricks and mortar" store. Retail continued to support the enormous traffic generated by the EB community (10 million page impressions and 10,000 forum posts a day) and also supported both an administrator and a team of 30 forum moderator volunteers.

By 2005, the online ad market was becoming more viable with the EB brand getting traction with advertisers to generate more regular ad revenue. Personal borrowing was used to fund a website rebuild to maximise ad revenue opportunities on the site. The rebuild was completed in December 2005 and by March 2006, EB had entered into discussions with Fairfax regarding a sale of the business. EB was finally acquired by Fairfax Digital in January 2007.

Kylie is now trying her hand at running a business with a proven model and funding in place as CEO of www.buyster.com.au, an online retail start Joint Venture between www.netus.com.au and www.csnstores.com in the US.
